Room 1 - Math in the Real World - To fully understand math you have to see how numbers work and the patterns they create.  It is best for children to learn this by through ongoing opportunities to play, use, and experiment with numbers, during the K-8 school years, in the real world. Tara Atkinson, the mother of 4 boys, has always believed in child-led education.  She strives to help her children explore life, while catering each boys learning to their unique personality, and ensuring they all get a "good" education." 

Room 2 - Intro to Homeschooling - If you still have questions about What you need to KNOW, What you need to DO, and Where to START., then let Celiane and Ron Limes help put you at ease with their valuable introduction to things such as....... the WA state homeschooling law, things to consider before beginning, learning and teaching styles, choosing curriculum, scheduling and record keeping, the “What about socialization?” question, and MORE.  Ron and Celiane Limes have been homeschooling their three growing boys for five years and love to encourage other parents to embrace homeschool as a lifestyle.

Room 3 - Joy of Classical Education: An Introduction - Susan Wise Bauer An overview of the philosophy of classical education and the ways in which home schoolers can pursue classical learning at home.  Covers the distinctives of a classical education, the benefits to the student, the three stages of classical learning (grades 1-4, 5- 8, and 9-12), the subjects taught in each stage, and the overall goals of classical education.

Where can I find a technically sound, Creation-based designed-for-homeschoolers science curriculum that will interest, amuse and motivate my students while allowing them to work independently? Room 1 - Dads: The Men in the Gap - Wade Hulcy - Typically, we as fathers want to be involved in our home schools but either don’t know how or can’t find the time.  Wade Hulcy (husband of Jessica Hulcy of KONOs Unit Studies) will share practical ways for a busy dad to be involved and fulfill his role as provider, protector, family priest, partner, and principal.  Moms and Dads should attend together when possible.

Room 2 - LapBooking 101 - Are you looking for productive ways to bring your topic of study to life, for better retention of information?  By using many different types of hands-on activities and placing them in an enhanced manipulated file folder or notebook, you will discover a great way to display any topic of study while making a delightful keepsake. Tina Joyce is an experience lapbooker with many examples to share to aid you in discovering this exciting way to bring “fun” into homeschooling for all grade levels.

- The Four Deadly Errors of Teaching Writing - Andrew Pudewa - We’ve all suffered it at one time or another:  Frustration about writing assignments.   Some of the tough questions include: What to correct and how to give a grade?  How much help.... is too much help?  Is the assignment clear?  And, Why don’t students find their own errors?  Learn how to avoid the four most common teaching mistakes that contribute to frustrations for teacher and student alike.

Room 5 - Getting a Right Start in Fractions
Anyone, age 6 and up, can understand basic fractions with the very concrete linear model (not circles). This fraction refresher will give you confidence in teaching (or reteaching) this important topic. You will also learn a few fraction card games.

Room 3 - Great Books: History as Literature - Susan Wise Bauer - The study of Great Books covers both history and literature, woven together.  This workshop will help you construct a challenging and interesting Great Books study for your middle school or high school student as well as the technicalities of documenting the course on a high school transcript.  We'll also cover the reading, writing, and research skills necessary to fulfill such a course of study, and how to do Great Books, even with a student who needs remedial work.

Room 3 - Teaching Boys & Other Children Who Would Rather Make Forts All Day - Andrew Pudewa - Children like to do what they can do; they want to do what they think they can do, and they hate to do what they think they cannot do.  If you want excited and enthusiastic children who learn well, you must understand these key laws of motivation, and focus on the essential requirement of "relevancy", and how to foster it.

Room 1 - Bolstering the Basics and Finding Fraction Fluency                            
On Thursday, March 13, 2008, a presidential panel recommended an increased learning focus on math basics, fractions and geometry in the early grades.  Come, learn many simple techniques and activities to use with your children that provide stronger recall of basic math facts and help develop fluency in using fractions.  We will include many simple, inexpensive manipulatives that can be found at home.

No other language affects English as much as Latin – and it increased your ability to learn any other subject. Room 1 - The Child-Led-Elective Education  - Tara Atkinson  mother of 4 boys, and President of Oregon Homeschool Education Network, describes her families approach to homeschooling as AC-CELE (Academic-Core, Child-Elective-Led-Education).  It's main principle is that the parents decide what subjects are "Core - and thus essential" for their child's education.  Everything else comes from the child, based on his unique interests, passions and personality.  This both challenges and empowers parents to think about what is truly important to them, and why, while also leaving plenty of opportunities for the student to explore and learn on their own terms.

Room 3 - Preparing for College Admissions - Susan Wise Bauer - We should start thinking about college in seventh grade!  But even if your child is older, all is not lost.  This workshop covers both proper academic preparation for college (writing skills, broad liberal arts, and sciences, SAT preparation and testing, etc.), and the technicalities of keeping high school records that will impress college admissions officers.  We will discuss portfolios, writing samples, transcripts, diplomas, extra-curricular activities, as well as choosing a school, filling out an application, and writing admission's essays.

Have you wanted to teach music to your children but felt intimidated since you never learned to play? Room  3 - Nurturing Confident Communicators: The Power of Linguistic Patterns - Andrew Pudewa - Many parents think that good readers will naturally become good writers.  Others think that writing talent is just that--a natural ability--some have it others don't. History and modern research show very clearly how good writers have developed, and what are the two most critical things you can do as a parent to develop a high level of aptitude, from young age through high school.
